Department of Translation and Interpretation

The Department of Translation and Interpretation,the former Department of English Translation and Interpretation founded in 2002,is one of the earliest and key Departments in CISISU. In 2012, approved by Ministry of Education, BTI (Bachelor of Translation and Interpreting) was established in this department, making CISICU one of the first independent colleges with translation program at undergraduate level.

We now have 4 teaching and research sections, 1 Translation Center, and about 60 teaching classes with more than 1,800 students.

In accordance with the talent cultivation model of “1+N” (1 diploma + varied certificates), we have always believed in the cultivation of inter-disciplinary English professional translators and interpreters, insisting on their learning ability, practical proficiency and innovative capacity. We are also committed to developing excellent teachers, students and courses, which has won us greater social recognition and compliment. The department enjoys a qualified faculty of more than 60 full-time teachers, more than 15% of which are full professors and associate professors, and over 95% of which own Master’s Degree, which forms an excellent teaching group devoted to teaching, innovation and academic research. Meanwhile, teachers for translation skills and other comprehensive courses are granted with CATTI (level 2) certificates, and over 60% of them are double professionally titled.

Talent Cultivation Objective:

The bachelor’s degree cultivation program for Translation and Interpretation majors is to train all-round translators and interpreters with political integrity and professional competence as well as broad international horizon.

Graduates are to be equipped with relevant working languages, high ability of logic thinking, broad knowledge, high quality of cross-cultural communication and good professional ethics, a good understanding of Chinese and western cultures, basic theories and excellent skills in translation and interpretation, good command of translation tools, comprehension of the operation process of translation and interpretation industry and other relevant realms, as well as equipped with independent thinking ability,  working capacity and strong ability of communication and coordination.

Graduates are capable of translation and interpretation positions of medium difficulty and above as well as other cross-cultural communication posts in various domains of foreign affairs, economy and trade, education, culture, science and technology, and military affairs, and thereby become a vital force for the introduction of international advanced technology and culture in accordance with the Chinese government’s “go global strategy for philosophy and social sciences”.

Objects:

Students who have finished four years' undergraduate study are to be granted bachelor degree in literature. During the four years' study, they mainly focus on the study of foreign language and basic knowledge of translation, and are to be equipped with bilingual abilities in intercultural communication, translation and interpretation.

Graduates shall be capable of the following:

  1. knowledge of English in pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar; ability in listening, speaking, reading and writing; knowledge and ability of Chinese language and writing; as well as the ability in speech, debate and language study;
  2. knowledge and ability in translation, including skills and theory in translation and interpretation, cross-cultural communication and overall competence;
  3. related knowledge of translation, including that of local and foreign culture, linguistics and literature, modern information technology and translation software, international business and public diplomacy;
  4. knowledge of leading translation theory and prospect, and that of the demand of translation industry and its development;
  5. knowledge of national policy, rules and regulations;
  6. ability of critical thinking and academic research.

Employment orientation:

Our graduates are capable of

  1. translation and interpretation in: foreign affairs offices, foreign consulates, foreign-funded enterprises, state-owned enterprises, foreign trade corporations, news publishing industry, Customs, civil airlines, travel agencies, troops, armed police, judicial authorities, translation companies etc ;
  2. teaching, research and administration in educational and scientific research institutions.
